The Purpose of Transmission Fluid

Built as a hydraulic fluid, it is not unlike other types of oil changes and fluids that you use within your Volkswagen. Fortunately, it is one of the fluids with the longest life spans, so flushing and exchanging this fluid is not required as frequently as other services. It assists the transmission with the shifting of gears automatically or manually, depending on your model. It also assists with putting your vehicle in reverse. After 60k miles, transmission fluid starts to slowly break down and will need to be exchanged soon. By the time you reach 90k miles, if you have not already flushed and exchanged the fluid, you need to do so right away.

Myth About Transmission Fluid

One of the rumors you may hear around independent service centers is the myth that transmission fluid does not go bad, and can last the life of the transmission. Some Volkswagen owners feel this way, as well. When you do not have this fluid exchanged, it and your transmission will start to fail shortly after crossing 100k miles. When you exchange your transmission fluid regularly as recommended by the manufacturer, you will get a much longer life out of your transmission and save lots of money for repair and costs down the line.
